Bathroom Renovations in NYC

by | May 12, 2020 | Apartment Renovations, Interior Design, Renovations

This post will review some bathroom renovations in NYC. I am Jorge Fontan an architect and owner of NYC Architecture firm Fontan Architecture. The bathrooms below are all from our projects in NYC.

Grey Bathroom in a Chelsea Loft

This first bathroom is in a Loft in Chelsea. The owners wanted to add a second bathroom and renovate the master bath. This grey bathroom is the master. We designed it to be a generally simple and modern with a bit of a textural feel to work with the fact that this is in a loft. Lofts are former commercial or industrial buildings that have been converted to residential. They often have lots of material and texture. The tiles are all porcelain on the walls and floors. It is a weathered look porcelain tile that has a great feel to it.

There are two different tones of tiles the shower is a darker more textured tile with a 3D tile accent. And the smoother lighter grey tile. The sink top is white and the vanity is a modern wood floating vanity. Wood can be a great addition to a modern bathroom. Texture and materials bring life to an otherwise sanitary space.

The fixtures are all polished chrome against a rich detailed textured tile. Coordinating fixtures is an important aspect to any modern bathroom design.

Small Bathroom Addition in Chelsea

This is the second bathroom added to the loft apartment for the bathroom above. This is a small New York bathroom with horizontal porcelain tiles in a beige color. It is lighter and warmer than the master bath.

The vanity and toilet are both wall mounted which is a more modern look but also makes for more convenience with cleaning. Wall mounted toilets have another convenient aspect in renovations as they do not require a drain in the floor which allows for more freedom in their location.

The stall shower is in the same tile as the rest of the bathroom. We included grab bars for safety as the owners age in this apartment they wanted the little extra help getting in and out of the bath or shower.

Concrete Bathroom in the Financial District

This next bathroom is a bit more unique in that it is a concrete bathroom. The walls and floors are both a concrete finish applied to the walls. This is a very modern and industrial bathroom design.

The concrete walls are monolithic without any seems, this makes for a very minimalist yet textural feel. The concrete in the bathroom should be smooth whereas in the rest of this concrete apartment we used much more textured concrete with a rough feel.

Details make or brake any architectural or interior design. In this bathroom we used a linear drain for a minimalist and clean look.

White Bathroom UWS

This next bathroom is a white marble bathroom on the Upper West Side. The floor is a blue mosaic tile sometimes adding a bit of color can really help liven up a white bathroom.

The bathroom has a floor to ceiling vertical niche in all white marble. This is a Pure White marble with no veins giving a minimalist and serene look.

Small Bath in Brooklyn Heights

this next bathroom is in Brooklyn Heights apartment. The walls are porcelain with a stone look. It has a unique shower door with very modern roiling hardware. The glass is partially frosted allowing modesty if there is someone else in the bathroom (it was to be shared by the owner’s two sons) but the frosted glass also adds to the modern feel.

NYC Bathroom Renovations

As an architect, I study design and construction, but these are complicated and quite involved issues. Every project is different and must be assessed on its own unique characteristics. This post does not assume to cover every possible issue or condition, but provide a general overview of the topic.
