Concrete Bathroom Design(Last Updated On: March 9, 2020)
Bathroom design is evolving and concrete is a great alternative finish for a bathroom. Concrete finishes can be applied for a concrete bathroom design without using poured concrete.
Concrete Bathroom Design
Concrete is a very versatile material. you can make concrete floors, walls, concrete sinks, and countertops. As an architect I like to use concrete for its modern and unique look. It really feels architectural. I have even built entire homes out of concrete. I have another blog post if you want to read about Concrete House Design.
The picture below is of a concrete bathroom in an apartment we renovated in NYC. I was the architect and the contractor was KJ Remodeling. This was a very minimalist design. The bathroom only has a few materials with concrete being the primary. The walls and floors are concrete. This was done with a concrete finish applied on site. These types of finishes require high quality craftsmanship and are quite tedious to apply.
Concrete Bathroom Floor
If you are going to make a concrete floor in a bathroom you do not want it to be too textured to make sure it is comfortable to walk on. There are lots of details to take into consideration when making a bathroom especially when you are doing something a bit less common like a concrete bathroom.
The picture below is of a close up look at the concrete bathroom floor. This bathroom has a curbless shower where the concrete floor is continuous in and out of the shower. We installed a linear drain with a concrete finish top to make it even more continuous. This is a very modern concrete bathroom design detail.
Concrete Bathroom Walls
In this bathroom the owner had custom ceiling mounted towel bars made out of black tube metal hanging from the ceiling. This went very well with the concrete walls and floor. The bathroom has to be designed as one entity you need to make everything work together.
This next photo is a close up look at the concrete bathroom walls. They have a bit of texture but not too much as you wouldn’t want excessive texture in a bathroom.
Modern Bathroom Design
In my opinion there is only one real reason to make you bathroom with concrete and that is that it will look awesome. Concrete is a real modern look and gives a high end custom architectural feel to a home.

Concrete finishes can be applied with different types of texture from smooth to rough. In a bathroom you probably will want it to be more on the smooth side, but you can make it however you like if it is a manually applied concrete finish.
The picture below is not of a bathroom but shows a very textured concrete wall finish in an apartment we renovated in New York.
Porcelain Concrete Look Bathroom Tile
There are porcelain tiles made to look like concrete. There is a wide variety in color texture and sizes. This is a good alternative to actual applied concrete finish. The larger the pieces the more realistic it will look.
The picture below is of a bathroom we designed in a Chelsea Loft in NYC. These are porcelain tiles with a grey concrete weathered look. These tiles are from Porcelanosa.
Concrete Bathroom Design
As an architect, I study design and construction, but these are complicated and quite involved issues. Every project is different and must be assessed on its own unique characteristics. This post does not assume to cover every possible issue or condition, but provide a general overview of the topic.
