Using Concrete for Modern Home Design

by | Mar 15, 2020 | Houses

Concrete as a home design material has had a resurgence in the past 20 years. We are starting to see more concrete homes with concrete as an exterior material, and for interior finishes.

I want to put concrete into a few categories. First is structural concrete. you can build an entire house or building with structural concrete for example using poured in place concrete bearing walls. Second is concrete products. You can also make certain elements of a home out of concrete for example a concrete countertop. Third is concrete finishes such as applied concrete finishes. And the fourth would be faux finishes such as porcelains made to look like concrete.

Modern Concrete Home Exterior

This first project I am going to show is a poured in place concrete house we did a few years ago. This house is built in the flood zone in New York and is elevated on concrete columns. As an architect I like to use concrete for many reasons but especially in high risk areas like flood zones. But I have to be honest the number one reason I like concrete is because its a really cool material to design with. Concrete house are unique and have a really special look.

This next project is a modern Manhattan apartment we renovated. The client wanted to add texture and have an industrial feel. We used concrete finishes in many of the spaces within the apartment.

As an architect, I study design and construction, but these are complicated and quite involved issues. Every project is different and must be assessed on its own unique characteristics. This post does not assume to cover every possible issue or condition, but provide a general overview of the topic.
